Oriental Rugs: Home Decor & Artwork Too
Oriental area rugs make wonderful home accent and decor pieces, even when you’re not going for a full oriental style interior design theme. In fact, oriental rugs make excellent artwork designs which can be hung on a wall as well as spread on the floor.
Most authentic oriental area rugs have design elements which hold special significance to the region it is made in. Some rug makers even believe that no area rug can actually be perfect either because “only God is perfect.”
Most oriental rugs are made with varying shades of color, because the threads are shaded according to specific dye lots. So there are small differences from one dye lot to another. This makes each rug more unique and interesting though, because there’s never an exact match in color shades and blends.
The borders on an authentic oriental rug will vary from one style to another as well. Some rugs may have one large border while others have several narrow ones. In many cases you’ll also find narrow borders with design patterns between them too.
It’s common to see various configurations and styles of medallions in oriental rugs too. Sometimes these are designed in colors which compliment the overall design theme while other times they’re purposely made with contrasting colors instead.
Originally authentic oriental rugs were made with camel hair wool, but these days it’s not uncommon to find them with other types of wool such as that from sheep.
Oriental style area rugs can be woven on canvas, but more often than not the best quality rugs are hand knotted instead. When very fine wool is used to hand knot the rugs, a tighter canvas weave is also used and there are many more knots made when creating the rug. Usually these are a shorter pile rug too.
The closeness of these knots combined with the variety of color shades and multiple designs make for a wonderful quality oriental area rug that may decorate your home for a lifetime.
